Hi all.
I thought I would step waaaay outside my normal format to give you some insight into my sporadic posting of late. Basically I was rolling along at a nice, steady pace and then WHOMP… dead end, inspiration lost. I’ve been slowly working back into reviewing (let’s not kid ourselves, I’ve still been reading) but I feel like a sputtering engine. I’m sure every blogger has been through this so I’m here to say “Me too. I’m with you!” Bear with me everyone! I promise that I will soon get back into my usual flow. Here is a small preview of the titles I hope to review though the end of September and early October:
The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Woman in the Shadows by Jane Thynne
The Ballroom by Anna Hope
Only Daughter by Anna Snoekstra
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult
Hag-seed by Margaret Atwood
I would love to hear your personal stories of how you overcame reviewers block (that’s a thing right?)! All tips, magic spells, positive thoughts and what not are much appreciated 🙂
Read voraciously.
Hmm… reviewers block… As with all illnesses, I try to ride it out! 😀
I have this problem where I can’t start reading a new book until I’ve written at least a draft review of what I just finished. Then, and only then, do I feel like I’ve had enough closure to move on with my reading. The review could sit for a week or two or whatever amount of time until I feel like, “OK- no more slacking, I can’t do anything else until I’ve formally closed off this case!”
Sometimes it take a really good book to overcome the reviewing block and before you know it, you’re back on track. Sometimes it takes a mundane task that helps come up with a tag line for a review and tthe spell is broken… Sometimes, do whatever it takes but never let it become a boring chore… because book reviewing/blogging should always stay fun! 🙂
Sending your way a truckload of positive thoughts!

I think I had one phenomenal book and then a few less exciting but still great reads. I also took a “personal reading break” to read a couple books for myself and not to review which might have caused my inspiration to waiver. I think getting it out in the blogiverse has helped me come to terms with it 🙂 Thanks!

Read but read what you love! Remind yourself of why you love books so much. The more excited I am about something I’ve read the more I want to share. Good luck!

Yeah I agree! I love the reading part- I’ve just gotten a tad jaded with the writing which is unfortunate. Maybe I need to switch up my style!

Totally get it. Just recently I decided to stop writing this certain feature because I didn’t like it anymore and it was more a chore than anything else. Pointless if you don’t love it.

Maybe you’ve had some meh books – they’re always the hardest to write about. Also, the more behind I get, the more panicky I get and the more I don’t write reviews. Two ways round this – 1. A round-up post with short reviews, get them out of the way; 2. At least write up reviews in my paper journal so they’re there to copy out (doesn’t work if you don’t keep a paper journal).
It’s a funny time of year, so don’t beat yourself up too much!

I’ve definitely hit the panicky stage with no may read and awaiting review books- and a strict timeline I set for myself which I’m realizing was a BAD idea.

I’ve found the best way for me to break reviewers block is do something way out of the box – a tag (which I don’t normally do) or a graphic thing, or mini-reviews instead of a full post! I also tend to use post it flags to mark things I know I want to write about while I’m reading the next book, if I know I’m having trouble. May your slump be broken!

Nice idea! In response to another comment I had a small epiphany that a style change might break the redundancy of it. I might just do that for my next post!

I don’t know if this will help, but your reviews have helped me discover some great reads. Thanks

Hope you’ve recovered a little from your block. I find if I just sit st my computer and type, and it will be rubbish, I can eventually forge something out of it – a mini review or an idea for something else. Good luck!
